What to Check During Periodic Inspections

Per ASME B30.9 and EN 1492-1, a periodic inspection of a flat sling should include:

Visual Examination:

  • All frequent inspection items

  • Discoloration or stiff areas that may indicate chemical, UV, or heat damage

  • Evidence of internal damage (bending the sling to check for crackling sounds)

  • Reduced width from abrasive wear (the 1/10 rule)

  • Splice condition—check for broken or worn stitching, pull-out, or distortion
