A round sling protects its load-bearing core with an outer sleeve. But what happens when that sleeve is damaged? How does a rigger know whether the core inside is still intact?

Endless Round Slings.png

This is the problem the warning sleeve mechanism is designed to solve. Some round slings—particularly high-performance models like the Extreema® series—feature a red inner signal warning sleeve positioned beneath the outer protective cover . When the outer sleeve is cut, worn through, or otherwise breached, the red inner sleeve becomes visible. This is an immediate visual signal: the sling has been compromised and must be withdrawn from service.

Lishenflex has been manufacturing synthetic round slings for decades, and our experience shows that the warning sleeve is one of the most effective—and most misunderstood—safety features in modern lifting equipment.

1. How the Warning Sleeve Mechanism Works

The round sling core consists of a continuous bundle of high-tenacity synthetic yarns. Because this core cannot be removed for direct inspection without destroying the sling, protective covers and indicator layers play a critical role in inspection .

The warning sleeve mechanism operates on a simple principle: layered protection. The load-bearing core is surrounded by an inner signal sleeve (typically red), which is itself covered by an outer protective sleeve (often white or another color) .

Under normal conditions, only the outer sleeve is visible. The red inner sleeve remains hidden. If the outer sleeve is damaged—by a cut, abrasion, or puncture—the red layer is exposed. This exposure is the warning signal.

2. What the Warning Sleeve Indicates

The appearance of the red inner sleeve is a clear indication that the outer protective layer has been breached. According to inspection guidance, the inner red sleeve becoming visible means the protective barrier has failed and the core may be at risk .

However, the warning sleeve is not a precision instrument. It indicates that the outer layer has been compromised—it does not confirm that the core itself is damaged. The core may still be intact beneath the red sleeve, or it may have sustained damage from the same event that breached the outer cover.

Critical principle: The appearance of the red warning sleeve requires immediate withdrawal from service. A competent person must then examine the sling to determine whether the core is intact .

3. The Warning Sleeve in the Context of AS 4497:2018

The warning sleeve mechanism aligns with the inspection philosophy of AS 4497:2018, the Australian standard for synthetic fibre round slings. Since the load-bearing core cannot be directly inspected without destroying the sling, inspections must rely on observing and feeling the condition of the core through the cover .

The warning sleeve provides a visible, unambiguous signal that the outer barrier has been breached. This is particularly valuable because other forms of internal damage—such as core yarn bunching or contamination—may produce only subtle lumps that are difficult to interpret .

WorkSafe WA emphasizes that inspectors must be “sufficiently competent to detect and evaluate any defects or weaknesses that may affect the performance” of round slings . The warning sleeve simplifies this task by making one critical failure mode—outer sleeve breach—immediately visible.

4. What to Do When the Red Sleeve Is Exposed

If the red inner warning sleeve becomes visible:

Immediate action:

  • Withdraw the sling from service

  • Tag it clearly as “damaged—do not use”

  • Do not attempt to repair the sling

Inspection by a competent person:

  • Determine whether the core is intact or damaged

  • If the core is damaged, the sling is irreparable and must be destroyed

  • If only the outer sleeve is damaged and the core is intact, some manufacturers offer approved repair services—but the sling may only be returned to service after proper repair and re-certification by the manufacturer or an authorised agent

Lishenflex does not recommend field repairs of round sling sleeves. Any sleeve damage that exposes the inner signal layer should result in immediate withdrawal from service and evaluation by a qualified person.

5. Summary and Practical Recommendations

The warning sleeve mechanism is a visual safety indicator designed to alert riggers when the outer protective cover of a round sling has been breached. When the red inner sleeve becomes visible, the sling must be immediately withdrawn from service and inspected by a competent person.

Key takeaways:

  1. The warning sleeve is a visual indicator—red inner sleeve beneath the outer cover

  2. Visibility of the red sleeve means the outer barrier is breached

  3. Immediate withdrawal from service is required

  4. The core may or may not be damaged—inspection by a competent person is necessary

  5. Never repair the sling yourself—approved repair and re-certification by the manufacturer is required

  6. Warning sleeve is one part of a comprehensive inspection program

Lishenflex manufactures polyester round slings to EN 1492-2 and AS 4497:2018 standards, with a 7:1 safety factor and clear identification markings. Our products are available with protective sleeves and repair options for demanding applications.
